Côte d’Ivoire: A Strategic Partner for Florida Businesses

Côte d’Ivoire: A strategic partner for Florida businesses

An economic analysis by the Florida Africa Chamber of Commerce

The Florida Africa Chamber of Commerce (FACC) considers Côte d’Ivoire to be one of the most attractive markets in West Africa for American businesses, particularly those based in Florida. Supported by sustained economic growth, strong macroeconomic stability, and significant investments in infrastructure, the country has established itself as a regional business hub serving a market of more than 150 million consumers across the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU/UEMOA) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Côte d’Ivoire’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to exceed US$112 billion in 2026, with real GDP growth projected at 6.2%, reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies. Meanwhile, the African Development Bank (AfDB) projects average economic growth of approximately 6.4% for 2026–2027, supported by an investment rate exceeding 25% of GDP.

This strong economic performance is driven by several strategic sectors, including

  • Agribusiness, with Côte d’Ivoire remaining the world’s largest producer of cocoa and a leading exporter of cashew nuts, natural rubber, coffee, and palm oil;
  • Port infrastructure and logistics centered around the Port of Abidjan, the largest port in Francophone West Africa;
  • Energy, including oil, natural gas, and renewable energy;
  • Financial services and digital technologies;
  • Construction, real estate, and manufacturing industries.

For more than a decade, Côte d’Ivoire has maintained average annual economic growth of approximately 6.5%, a remarkable performance by global standards that reflects the country’s successful economic diversification beyond traditional commodity exports.

U.S. – Côte d’Ivoire Economic Relations

Economic relations between the United States and Côte d’Ivoire have entered a new phase of expansion. In 2025, several strategic agreements between American companies and the Ivorian government represented potential investments of nearly US$7 billion, primarily in the energy sector. Among the flagship projects announced was a US$5.1 billion oil refinery, along with additional investments in petroleum exploration and production. At the same time, the United States strengthened its commercial presence through the opening of a U.S. Commercial Service office in Abidjan, the first of its kind in Francophone Africa.

These developments illustrate a broader shift in U.S. engagement across Africa, emphasizing private-sector investment, industrial partnerships, and trade over traditional development assistance.

Why Florida’s Metropolitan Areas Should Look to Abidjan

The Florida Africa Chamber of Commerce believes that the economic relationship between Abidjan and Florida’s major metropolitan areas including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville remains significantly underdeveloped despite its enormous potential.

Miami already serves as the primary gateway for U.S. business engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean. By adopting a similar strategy toward West Africa, the city has the opportunity to become a major transatlantic business hub connecting American and African markets. Likewise, Abidjan offers direct access to the broader West African marketplace through its modern port infrastructure, regional financial institutions, and continuously improving business environment.

Key areas for bilateral cooperation include:

  • International trade and maritime logistics;
  • Agribusiness and food processing;
  • Financial technology (FinTech) and digital services;
  • Healthcare, biotechnology, and medical equipment;
  • Real estate development, infrastructure, and smart cities;
  • Renewable energy, natural gas, and oilfield services;
  • Higher education, workforce development, and innovation.

Our Opinion

The Florida Africa Chamber of Commerce believes that Côte d’Ivoire offers the core fundamentals sought by international investors: sustained economic growth, macroeconomic stability, modern infrastructure, a strategic geographic location, and a strong commitment to attracting foreign investment.

As a result, strengthening partnerships between Abidjan and Florida’s metropolitan regions represents a significant economic opportunity. Beyond increasing bilateral trade, such collaboration has the potential to create new regional value chains, stimulate cross-border investment, and position Florida as America’s premier gateway to West Africa.
